Sidewalks

Sidewalk inspections & maintenance

Sidewalks are inspected each Spring for surface damage and alignment. Sections that are considered a trip and fall hazard are documented and prioritized for repair or replacement. Many of those that are most impaired are repaired that year while others depending on budget limits are deferred to subsequent years.

Minor repairs such as patching broken or rough surfaces with asphalt or grinding trip edges are done by operations staff during the summer months.

Sidewalks are salt/sanded where the formation of ice and slippery conditions exist. Sidewalks are plowed after snow accumulation reaches 2.5 cm (1 inch) usually within 24 hours after the end of the storm. Sidewalks located on roads with schools and bus stops are plowed first. However, a heavy snowfall or successive winter events may lengthen the time to clear all the sidewalks.
