Road Reconstruction work involves the removal and replacement of the road surface and granular bedding underneath. This type of work typically includes the replacement of all curb and gutters if present on the street and may include all or some sidewalk replacement depending on the condition. Temporary road closures are usually required for these projects, except for local traffic.
Due to the nature of this work, staff inspect existing Town servicing before construction. This includes water mains, sanitary sewers, and storm sewers to determine if repairs are required as part of the construction works.
Should Town staff recommend operational improvements, these would be included into the construction works.
Should sidewalks be present, sidewalk ramp retrofits may be required at the intersections. This is a recent requirement from the “Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act” (AODA) which is required for all major road construction projects across Ontario. These retrofits require the installation of iron tactile plates.
Construction phasing for this type of work is often project specific, depending on the scope above. However, in general residents may expect the following construction phasing:
- Excavation & Removals – this includes removing the existing road surface, granular road bedding, curbs, and gutters. The common depths of excavation typically range from 40 to 60cm. Existing services that require repairs or replacement, will occur at deeper excavation depths. Excavation work may be phased further depending on the scope.
- Granular Bedding – once excavation and underground repairs are complete for a section of road, granular bedding may be placed and compacted.
- Concrete Works – this phase includes work for curbs, gutters, catchbasins, maintenance holes and sidewalks.
- With the granular bedding in place, wooden form work is installed so new concrete curbs, gutters and sidewalks can be poured. Work occurring in front of driveways will be phased to allow narrowed vehicular access into your driveway, while the concrete cures for 2 to 4 days.
- Catchbasins and maintenance holes are typically repaired and adjusted to the final elevation at this time.
- Asphalt Surface – with the previous steps complete, asphalt paving may begin. This usually occurs in two layers, with the final layer being level with the gutters, catchbasins and maintenance holes.
- Restoration – with the paving complete, it is time for final restorations. This will include the replacement of topsoil, sod, and final clean-up of the job site.
- Warranty Period – should any deficiencies occur; the contractor is responsible for warranty repairs for 1 to 2 years. Town staff monitor the site during this warranty period however, residents are encouraged to notify the Town if they have any concerns.
