Tours and Safety Programs

FES offers a tools and toys programs for our young audience which focus on good and bad behaviours relating to fire safety. Topics of discussion include:

• Introduction of basic fire safety (smoke alarm sound)
• Crawl low under smoke
• Familiarization of firefighters including the gear we wear
• Show firefighter gear to students (students have opportunity to try gear on)
• Fire truck tours
• Sparky visits

Presentation runs about 30-40 minutes.

FES introduces kindergarten students to fire and life safety with discussions on:

• Firefighters are our friends
• What is 9-1-1
• What is hot, what is not
• Show firefighter gear to students (students have opportunity to try gear on)
• Firetruck tour
• Sparky visits

Grade one students start to learn about fire prevention through our travelling sparky program. This program is based on the school's current curriculum. The program runs throughout the school year. It will be dropped off in September and then collected in the Spring.

• Each student will have an opportunity to take plush Sparky home
• Complete the checklist with their family and record the experience
• In the spring, the fire department returns to speak with class about their experience and activities
• Fire truck tour
• Sparky visits

Grade two students review what they have learnt in previous years about fire and life safety. They also learn about the importance of having a home escape plan and what to do with it. Topics covered include:

• Smoke and Carbon Monoxide (C/O) alarms
• Home Escape Plans – how to create one, meeting places, and practicing with the family
• Sleeping with door closed

Presentation runs about 45-60 minutes.

Grade three students are presented with the understanding and importance of home safety and being prepared for a fire. Topics covered include:

• Home fire prevention (Prepare, prevent, practice)
• Making smart choices with fire
• Smoke and C/O alarms

Grade four students focus on fire prevention with everyday household hazards. Topics covered include:

• What is a hazard?
• What dangers come with these hazards
• How to prevent these hazards
• Group participation – hazards hidden throughout the classroom and students will identify them and explain why they are considered a household hazard

Grade five students focus on a fun review of fire and life safety through a game of Jeopardy. This game will review:

• Smoke and C/O alarms
• Home escape planning
• Fire hazards
• Dangers of fire
• Prevention
• What do to when you call 9-1-1

Grade six students will learn the depth of Carbon Monoxide (C/O) through understanding its dangers and its expectations. Topics of discussion include:

• What is C/O (Silent Killer)
• What produces C/O
• Prevention of C/O
• Symptoms of C/O

Grade seven students learn about preparing for an emergency/disaster. Emergencies/disasters can happen anywhere and, in most cases, when you least except them. Topics of discussion include:

• 72-hour preparedness kits
• Risks of emergencies/disasters in York Region and East Gwillimbury
• Having a plan
• Evacuations

Grade eight students will learn about safety in the kitchen. Most students at this age are learning to cook for themselves and for younger siblings while home alone. Kitchen fires are the number one cause of residential fires and can easily be prevented. Topics of discussion include

• Identify and eliminate hazards that contribute to kitchen fires
• Describe safe cooking behaviours
• Ontario law relating to Smoke and C/O alarms
• Importance of a home fire escape plan
