Council Code of Conduct
The Municipal Act, 2001 (the “Act) requires that all municipal Councils adopt a Code of Conduct and appoint an Integrity Commissioner and Closed Session Meeting Investigator.
The Code of Conduct was adopted to establish a common basis for the ethical behaviour of Members of Council and local Boards, and increase public confidence by making a commitment to operate with integrity, justice and courtesy.
The Act also provides that all meetings of a council shall be open to the public; however, the Act further provides specific reasons why a council may choose to close a meeting to the public. Section 239 of the Act lists those reasons.
Complaints relating to the Code of Conduct or closed session meetings can be made to the Integrity Commissioner and Closed Session Meeting Investigator in writing by email or mail. Complaints will be heard, investigated and responded to.
